Swimmers Cut Time
by Coach Downs
The Boys Swimming Team participated in the Salina South/Central Invitational on Wednesday and had a very successful meet with a lot of best times and a lot of first swims. First up in the 200 Medley Relay for the B relay was Bondarchuk in for the back, Ivy in for the breast, Hoopes back in for the fly, and Bryce Bischler in for the free. They did well for themselves, taking in 18 points! Next up was the A relay with Kalp taking off about a second in his back, Braden Bischler with a strong swim in the breast, freshman Hoang replacing Bradley in the fly, and Herndon with an incredible 25.91 second freestyle finish. They are .5 away from state consideration time. They took 5th place for 28 points! Now into the 50 free, Bondarchuk, who continues to take off time on his 50 every time he swims it, was able to take off another second. Freshman Bischler, staying right in his time was able to gain 1 point for our team (he was very excited about this). Herndon took off a full second on his 50 getting 9th place and gaining 9 points. Last up in the 50 was senior Bischler. Bischler, who had been banging his head on the wall barely chipping of a tenth of a second every swim was able to finally break his 26 second time and take off half a second. He got 6th place gaining 13 points. Up next in the 100 fly was first time swimmer Hoang. Hoang had a strong first swim with a time to match! His fly has improved so much over the season. He was able to place 8th for 11 points. In the 100 free, Hoopes had an amazing swim cutting off close to 10 seconds! Freshman Bischler was able to cut off 2 more seconds placing 13th and gaining 4 more points for our team. Kalp was last to swim coming in .5 under his best time. He is now only a second from state consideration. He placed 7th with 12 points. In the 500 free Herndon had a surprising swim where he took off 6 seconds, moved up two places to be in 6th and gained 13 points. He could barely walk afterwards but I think his amazing swim was worth it. In the 200 free relay we really had to count on the B team to bring in the points. First in the water was freshman Bischler who had a strong swim with splits just on his best time, next in was Hoopes who also was able to stay right on his best time, Bondarchuk who had recently just earned his place on the free relay was able to jump another full second, and last in was Hoang who was also right on his best time. These boys moved up from last with no time to 9th for another 18 points! Next up in the 100 back was Hoopes; he stayed right on his best time but was able to place 9th for 9 points. Kalp was able to not only get a state consideration time but is now only 1 second from qualifying because he took off 3 full seconds! He placed third for 16 points. With the meet coming to a close the 100 breast was finally up. Bondarchuk, swimming the event for the first time ever, was able to finish 13th with 4 points. Ivy, who had not been feeling well, was able to finish 12th for 5 points.  Last but not least was senior Bischler who was finally able to break his 1:13 due to his strong first 50 where he led the heat up until the turn, he placed 2nd overall with 17 points and a solid state consideration time. The boys did so well for themselves and everyone dropped some time and gained points for our team. We are very ready for league, which will be held on Saturday, February 10th at El Dorado.
