Wrestlers Place 13th at State
by Grant Scheer
The Rose Hill wrestling team competed in the 4A State Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Tony’s Pizza Event Center in Salina. With a blizzard imminent on Saturday for parts of the state, including Salina, KSHSAA changed Saturday’s schedule to try and accommodate an earlier departure for the teams. However, many teams ended up snowed in and had to stay until Sunday. The Rockets took a total of seven wrestlers with three of them placing. With 49 teams in the tournament the Rockets placed 13th, which is a huge accomplishment. The main point contributors were David Leck, Kyle Sackett, and Grant Scheer. Kyle Sackett went 4-2 with a 4th place finish. Both of his losses were to the 3rd place medalist, Kolton Misener of Chanute. Keegan Beavers recorded a 1-2 record for the tournament winning his first match by a major decision before losing the next two matches. Peyton Besco’s first state tournament appearance resulted in a 0-2 record but he gained great experience for the future. Cole Daughhetee was 2-2 at the state tournament in his first season as a Rocket and lost a 3-2 heartbreaker in the consolation quarterfinals that cost him a trip to the podium later in the day. David Leck capped an outstanding season by placing 3rd with a 4-1 tournament record and finishing the season with an overall 40-3 record. His only loss at the state tournament came in the State Semifinals to defending state champion Gavin Cullor of LaCygne-Prairie View. Grant Scheer suffered an upset in the first round when Dax Hopp of Lindsborg-Smoky Valley came from behind to record a last second win. However, Scheer came back strong on the consolation side of the bracket by winning his next four matches, including a consolation semifinal overtime victory over Hopp, to qualify for the consolation finals. Scheer then lost a decision to Dakotah Whiteley of Abilene to finish his senior season in 4th place at the state tournament. Clayton Epley finished his first state tournament appearance with a 1-2 record. Epley recorded a fall in his first round consolation matchup with Josiah Schwarz of Abilene. The team placing 13th is the best finish for the Rocket’s wrestling program since 2007 when they were the state runner-up. The team would like to thank all of the parents, family, and friends who supported them at the state tournament, especially those who braved the blizzard going on outside on Saturday.
Boys Finish Second in League
by Konner Barron
The Rose Hill boys traveled to Mulvane Thursday night for the final game of the regular season. The first quarter was a little rough for Rose Hill as they only put up 9 points. In the second quarter Dalton Rapp caught fire putting up 7 points to give the rockets a 24 -17 lead going into halftime. In the 3rd quarter the Rockets came out on fire outscoring the Wildcats 17 to 9 as they shot the ball extremely well. The 4th quarter was more of the same for the Rockets as they cruised to the 58 to 40 win. Konner Barron led the Rockets with 22 points. The Rockets earn second in league for the first time in over 5 years. The boys will host Topeka Hayden Wednesday Night for the first round of the 4A Playoffs. The game will start at 7:00 with Senior Night festivities starting at 6:20. Come out and support the Rocket boys as they take on Topeka Hayden.
Girls League Champs
by Tyce Carlson
The Rocket girls hit the road to take on their rival Mulvane Wildcats for one last regular season game last Thursday. After a close first half, the Rockets took off scoring 49 to the Wildcats 32. Emily Adler led the charge with 18 points, followed by Haley Thrush who had 11 points and Breckynn Myers with 10 points. The win over Mulvane gives the Lady Rockets the right to call themselves league champions. The Rockets will have the advantage Thursday as they play their first round of sub-state at home against a tough Augusta team, who handed the Lady Rockets a loss earlier in the season. Come out and give the girls your support. Tip-off will be at 7:00.
