Hoang Qualifies For State Meet

The Rocket Golf team traveled back to Wellington on Monday for the Regional Golf Meet. At stake were state berths for the top three teams as well as for the top individuals whose team does not qualify for the state meet. The Rockets placed 4th as team behind Wellington, Augusta, and Mulvane who all qualified for the State Tournament in Dodge City next Monday. For the Rockets Senior Zach Hoang, who has led the Rockets all season, had another good performance finishing in a tie for 5th place. This was good enough to qualify Hoang for the State Tournament in Dodge City at the Mariah Hills Golf Course. The Rockets also had several other golfers in the Regional Tournament that did not qualify for State. Brennan Evans shot a 103 to place 24th, both Caiden Crosby and Gunner Folk shot a 104 to tie for 25th place, Lane Gardner shot a 110 to finish tied for 29th place, and Brody Barrus shot a 119 to finish tied for 36th place. Hoang and Coach Browning will be making the long trip to Dodge City this next weekend for the State Meet. We all wish Zach the best of luck as he attempts to bring home some hardware!

Orioles End Lady Rockets Season

The Lady Rockets hosted the Augusta Orioles Monday evening in the first round of the regional tournament. After losing a close 2-1 game to the Orioles on April 29th, the Lady Rockets were looking to gain the upper hand this time around. However, the Lady Orioles struck quickly as they scored first in the 4th minute on a free kick from 40 yards out that bounced off the hands of Rocket’s goalkeeper and into the back of the net. They then struck again in the 8th minute on another free kick, this time from 30 yards out into the top corner of the goal. Finding themselves quickly down 2-0, the Lady Rockets were determined to fight back and they started the comeback with a goal in the 24th minute as a low cross into the box by Kayden Lucent was knocked into the goal by Lexi Rose. The score remained 2-1 for the remainder of the first half. After halftime, the Lady Rockets continued fighting as they attempted to tie the score. In the 61st minute Korryn Hackney had a break away counter drawing the goalie out and then was able to just get the ball by her to tie the score 2-2. The Orioles then scored again in the 75th minute to take a 3-2 lead over the Rockets. In attempt to tie the score again, the Lady Rockets brought everyone up but the Orioles were able to counter and a late goal in the 80th minute to ice the game and earn the 4-2 victory over the Rockets. After the game, Coach Henderson said, “Unfortunately, we put ourselves in too big a hole early. We clawed and fought to come back and tied it up. We just let them sneak one in late on us to make it 3-2. The last goal came with us pushing to get another equalizer and not having enough girls back to defend but I would rather push to win than try to hold and not to lose by more. I was very proud of the girl’s effort and their attitude was good all night. Even when we lost Korryn late in the game there was no quit in them.”
