Lady Rockets Place 4th At State

The Lady Rockets faced Bishop Miege on Friday, May 24th in the State Semifinal game; sadly, they lost 3-0. The ladies played a good game and fought hard but in the 24th minute Bishop Miege scored. Only three minutes later, in the 27th minute, Bishop Miege scored again to take a 2-0 lead. In the 59th minute Bishop Miege scored again to contain the lead and put the Rockets away with the loss of 3-0. The Ladies had a total of one shot with it being int he second half. The Lady Rockets Goalkeeper, Abby McCulloch, had a total of six saves with one being in the first half and five in the second half. Head coach Shelby Kaba stated this after the game, “Our state semi-final run ended in a 3-0 defeat to Bishop Miege. Their physicality and pace overwhelmed us, limiting our ability to control the game and play our normal offensive style. Playing a powerhouse like the seven-time state champions was a valuable learning experience that provides focus areas for improvement as we gear up for a rematch next year!”. On Saturday, May 25th the Lady Rockets took on McPherson in the finals Round and ended up taking 4th place losing against McPherson by the score of 2-1. Senior Paige Loeck scored a Penalty Kick putting the Lady Rockets up 1-0 in the 25th minute. Only a minute later, in the 26th minute, McPherson scored again tying up the game at 1-1. Coming out of half time, in the 41st minute, McPherson scored again to put the Bullpups up 2-1. Their defense shut out the Lady Rockets for the rest of the game ending the game with a 2-1 victory for McPherson. The Lady Rockets had a total of nine shots with six being in the first half and three in the second half. Abby McCulloch had a total of three saves with two being in the first half and one in the second half. Head Coach Shelby Kaba stated this after the girls’ game, “In the state consolation game, we fell short to McPherson 2-1. Despite creating scoring opportunities, we couldn't capitalize and fell victim to uncharacteristic defensive lapses. The Bishop Miege game likely played a role, as we were a little banged up. We'll learn from this experience and come back stronger next season”.

Rockets Fall At State

The Rocket baseball team headed to Salina on May 23rd to face the second seeded Abilene Cowboys in the first round of 4A State. However, this game wouldn’t be the best for the Rockets as it would eventually be the game that ended our playoff run and season. In the first inning, shots would be taken from both the Rockets and the Cowboys with the Rockets stepping to the plate first scoring a run to take an early lead 1-0. The Cowboys would quickly respond with two runs of their own to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Unfortunately, after that first inning the Rocket bats would go extremely silent. Both teams wouldn’t break the board in the second and third innings, but in the bottom of the fourth the Cowboys would add to their lead with an insurance run to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The fifth would be silent for both teams, with the bottom of the sixth adding two runs to Abilene’s lead to bring the final score of 5-1 with the Rockets falling short in the end. Colton Roberts threw a complete game for the Rockets giving up six hits, five earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. The Rocket bats didn’t help Roberts at all, as he kept the game close to the very end as the Rocket lineup would only have two hits on the game. This was a good season for the Rockets; however, it leaves a coarse feeling when you get so close to gold just to fall short.
